Opened in 2012, the “Stadshuis” of the municipality of Nieuwegein near Utrecht in the Netherlands combines various facilities such as the town hall, a library, shops and a multicultural centre in one building.
The design comes from the architectural firm 3XN. The open architecture of the atrium with its spiral staircase is designed so that employees and visitors can see what is happening on the other levels. “It was important for us to create a building that is inviting rather than authoritarian,” says Kim Herforth Nielsen, founder of 3XN.
